Challenge

A New Era in Urban Transit

Since 2018, TWD has been working on the Valley Line LRT Project, a 13.1km southeast stretch between the southeast of Edmonton to the Downtown core. The Valley Line LRT will connect passengers to major destinations within the City of Edmonton, providing a more affordable, accessible, and sustainable transportation option.

The new addition includes 11 stops with new signalized pedestrian crossings; Davies elevated transit center which includes full Park & Ride; new bridge spanning North Saskatchewan River; a total 800m Tunnel; an interchange at existing Churchill station; and 12 Utility Complexes.

Outcome

A Pinnacle of Electrical Engineering Expertise

The successful completion of the project involved comprehensive engineering services throughout the construction Stage, encompassing clarifications, re-design efforts, and field review engineering services. The electrical engineering scope covered a wide range of components, including:

  • guideways,
  • operation and maintenance facilities,
  • duct banks,
  • stations,
  • rail stops,
  • tunnels,
  • all building stations,
  • operation facilities,
  • utility complexes,
  • electrical utility coordination,
  • and fire and safety systems.

With a total of 28 electrical design packages addressing various voltages (15kV, 5kV, 600V, 208V, 120V), the project also incorporated a robust 200 kW stand-by generator system, serving critical loads through auto-start, auto-transfer capabilities, and featuring a sub-base fuel tank designed for extreme temperatures. Additionally, extensive calculations and studies were conducted for power distribution, grounding, lighting, fire alarm and life safety, as well as electrical track heating systems, with meticulous review and approval processes for material shop drawings, inspections and test plans, and commissioning plans.
